Golf club hire in Scotland
A Scottish golf trip usually means several courses and a lot of driving. Hire a set from a local golfer and leave the travel bag at home.
One set for a whole itinerary
Few people come to Scotland for one round. A typical trip strings together Fife, Angus, East Lothian or Ayrshire over a week, in a hire car that is rarely as big as you hoped. Flying your own clubs in adds baggage fees and a bulky case to every transfer.
Hiring a set once, near where you land, covers the whole trip. Sets on Tools of Golf belong to Scottish golfers rather than a pro-shop fleet, and the listing shows exactly what you're getting before you book.
What to look for in a hire set
Links golf is played in wind and off firm turf, so a set you can keep low and control is worth more than one built for distance. Match shaft flex and length to what you play at home, and check there are enough wedges to cover bump-and-run shots as well as full swings.
Most Scottish courses are walked, often with a pull trolley or a caddie, so the bag matters too. Look for a carry or stand bag rather than a tour bag, and check the listing for whether a putter, bag and waterproof hood are included.
Booking around tee times
The best-known links take visitors, but tee times at the most famous ones go quickly and some are allocated by ballot. Fix those dates first and build the rest of the trip around them.
Then book clubs for the full span, including the day you arrive if the pickup is near the airport. Owners block out dates their set isn't available, so each listing's calendar is accurate.
Where you'll play
Links worth planning a trip around
From Ayrshire to the Highlands — most itineraries pick one or two regions and stay put.
The Old Course
St Andrews, Fife
The home of golf: shared fairways, double greens and the Road Hole. Public, but the hardest tee time in the country to get.
Kingsbarns Golf Links
Kingsbarns, Fife
A modern links a few miles down the coast from St Andrews, with the sea in view on almost every hole.
Carnoustie Golf Links
Carnoustie, Angus
The Championship course is the sternest test on the Open rota, with a closing stretch across the Barry Burn.
North Berwick Golf Club
North Berwick, East Lothian
The West Links: stone walls, blind shots and the original Redan. Eccentric in the best way.
Gullane Golf Club
Gullane, East Lothian
Three links over Gullane Hill with long views across the Firth of Forth.
Prestwick Golf Club
Prestwick, Ayrshire
Birthplace of the Open. Quirky, blind in places and unlike anything else on the Ayrshire coast.
Royal Troon Golf Club
Troon, Ayrshire
An Open venue famous for the tiny Postage Stamp par 3 and a brutal inward nine into the wind.
Turnberry
Turnberry, Ayrshire
The Ailsa course runs along the rocks beneath the lighthouse, looking out to Ailsa Craig.
Cruden Bay Golf Club
Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire
Huge dunes and a routing full of surprises, north of Aberdeen.
Royal Dornoch Golf Club
Dornoch, Sutherland
The Highland links where Donald Ross learned the game. Worth the drive north.

Pricing
What a hire costs
Owners set their own prices, so there's no single rate card. Every listing uses one of two models, and the price you see is the price you pay.
Day rate
One price per day
The simplest model: a flat daily price multiplied by the number of days you book.
Price bands
Cheaper the longer you keep them
Owners can set bands by length — for example one price for a weekend and a lower daily rate for a week. Each listing shows its own bands.
No extras
Nothing added at checkout
Pickup is local, so there's no shipping, and no booking fee on top of the listed price. A deposit, if the owner asks for one, is a hold on your card rather than a charge.
Rental protection
How renters and owners are covered
The same four rules apply to every rental on Tools of Golf.
You pay through the site
Rentals are paid by card at booking, through Stripe. The price on the listing is the price you pay, and you never need to hand cash to an owner.
A deposit is a hold, not a charge
If an owner asks for a deposit, the amount is shown on the listing and held on your card. It is released when the owner confirms the clubs are back.
Damage is capped at the deposit
If clubs come back damaged, the owner can claim the deposit — never more than the amount shown on the listing. Both sides should photograph the set at pickup and at return.
We review disputes
If the set is not as described, the handover does not happen, or you think a deposit was wrongly kept, open a dispute from your dashboard and our team will review it.
Questions about hiring clubs
- How does golf club hire in Scotland work on Tools of Golf?

- What if my plans change?
- Cancellation terms are set by the owner, so check the listing before you book and message the owner as early as you can if your dates move.
